Scleral Lenses

Scleral lenses are large rigid-surface contact lenses that are customized for each patient’s visual and medical eye needs.  These lenses require proper evaluation, fitting, and design by a skilled eye doctor.
 

Who can wear scleral lenses?

There are many applications for scleral lenses ranging from managing certain eye conditions, such as dry eye, keratoconus, post-corneal transplant, and Salzmann’s, and correcting high prescriptions.  To know if you are a candidate for scleral lens wear, schedule a specialty lens consultation appointment with our office. Your appointment will be scheduled with Dr. Charissa Young, FAAO, FSLS, who has more than 10 years of experience fitting scleral and specialty contact lenses.
 

What is the typical scleral lens prescribing process like?

During the specialty contact lens consultation, your eye doctor will conduct a thorough ocular health examination, topography, and other corneal measurements to determine if scleral lenses are appropriate.  Diagnostic scleral lenses may be applied to determine the initial lens specifications and to allow the patient a brief in-office trial of the lens.  If custom lenses are ordered, when they arrive, our staff will schedule your next appointment to dispense your lenses with your doctor followed by a one-on-one lens insertion and removal and care training appointment with our staff. After wearing your lenses, you will see your doctor for several follow-up appointments to determine if lens parameter changes need to be made until the optimal prescription is achieved.  The final lens is a one-of-a-kind, fully customized lens unique to each patient’s eye.
 

What happens after scleral lenses are prescribed?

Many scleral lens wearers have underlying medical eye conditions such as keratoconus, ocular surface disease, or corneal transplants.  Once your scleral lens prescription is finalized, your doctor will instruct you on scheduling the appropriate progress visits to ensure long-term ocular health and scleral lens success.
